Hey everyone, it's tour season again. It's weird because even though I'm an adult and long out of school, every year at this time, I can't help but go back in my mind to what school was like for me, and wonder, how did I ever survive. I know that some of you who are reading this blog post right now are probably wondering the same thing too. Perhaps you're a student dreading having to face the mean members of the cool crowd again, who never seem to give you a break. Or maybe you're not bullied aggressively by your classmates, but they just make you feel invisible and you're struggling to muster the enthusiasm for yet another long school year.
It's tough for me not to let myself get too lost in the past as I begin this tour season. And I know for those of you who are Adult Survivors like me, especially if you're parents too, and you have a child who's being bullied at school, not only are you concerned about what your son or daughter will have to deal with this school year, but you have to control your own feelings from the past that can't help but sneak up on you sometimes,
Or maybe you're a teacher reading this, and you're excited about getting back into the routine you love, but also worried about those students who no matter how much you try, seem to be left out in the cold by their peers.
The beginning of a new school year is a mixed bag for almost all of us. Despite whatever your situation may be as mid-August looms closer, remember this--you are not alone. We are all of us kindred spirits in the fight against school bullying and exclusion. Though we haven't met yet in person, each of you is in my heart and every time I stand in front of a crowd of teens sharing my story to try and motivate change, it is you I am celebrating, your courage and dignity I am honoring. So hang in there and visit this blog often, meet others who share some of what we've known in our struggle to cope with peer abuse.
And please take a peek at my tour dates on my website jodeeblanco.com and come to see me if I'm in a town near you. I so want to meet you. You'll hear that from me every blog post because I figure if I say it enough, my wish will come true and I'll get to meet all of you!
I'm sending everyone a hug. Wish me well as I embark on yet another journey fighting for our children and the inner-child still living in all of us.
See you soon.
