I was planning lessons and I came across your article entitled " Are you an 'adult survivor of peer abuse'? on cnn.com.
Thank you for taking the courage to speak out about a very private situation that many of us have had to get over it. "Peer abuse."
I grew up a light-skinned black female in an African-American black community and I cannot tell you the harassment I suffered because of it.
One of the points that you made in the article says it can affect you later in life. That is so true! My learning has been stunted, a fact that I learned very late in adulthood, so I am basically reteaching myself, while I also deal with many other issues.
I am still trying to undo the damage and alone.
I am also overweight, so that in itself is another issue. I am still battling it. And from time to time, I have had to hear the slight comments about my weight or the outright stares of people because of my size. I work with foreign students and strangely enough it isn't much of an issue, but it does slip out from time to time.
I have also heard people say she is so ugly.
I have heard these insults from both black as well as white. And I have had a few hostile confrontations because people felt like what they were telling me was the truth or when I stood my ground, the situation would just grow worse. Apparently my presence was enough to set people off.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for voicing what many of us have gone through.
Thank you......
